How we do it
Crown first, then brick, then flashing
Crowns get repaired or recast with a proper overhang and drip edge, so water sheds past the brick instead of running down it. Spalled brick gets cut out and matched, open joints repointed, and flashing counter-flashed into a ground joint rather than smeared over with tar.
When the top courses are too far gone to save, Billy takes the stack down to sound brick and rebuilds it to match the house. You get told which one you need and why, standing in the yard looking at it.

Should I repair or rebuild?
If spalling and open joints run more than a few courses down from the top, a partial rebuild is usually cheaper than chasing repairs year after year. Billy will show you where that line sits on your stack.
Can it wait until fall?
Summer is the right time. Every freeze-thaw cycle a cracked crown sits through pushes water deeper into the stack, and winter is when chimney work gets hard to schedule and hard to do well.
What’s the difference between the cap and the crown?
The cap keeps rain and animals out of the flue. The crown is the concrete shoulder around it that sheds water off the brick. They fail differently, and Billy checks both on every visit.
